Lou Gehrig smiling portrait

A smiling portrait of “The Iron Horse”, Lou Gehrig. Until Ripken came along, nobody had ever played in more consecutive games. He signed with the Yankees out of Columbia University in NYC in 1923, and would quietly accept his role in Ruth’s shadow during his career. ALS would claim his life at just 37 years old, and yet after the diagnosis, Lou told a packed Yankee Stadium, “Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth”.
